Customize your Home dashboards

Build, arrange, and share Home dashboards with the widgets, period, and clients that matter to you.

Written by Geoff Mina

Home dashboards put the numbers and work you care about on one page. Start from the Overview and Insights dashboards Moxie gives you, build your own from a library of widgets or a ready-made template, choose the period and clients each one shows, and share a dashboard with your team.

Before you begin

  • Everyone has Overview. People with access to business insights also start with Insights.

  • Widgets follow your permissions. You only see and add widgets for information you can already access, and a dashboard never grants anyone extra access.

  • Only the person who created a dashboard can edit, rename, share, or delete it. Workspace owners and full users can share dashboards with the team.

  • Editing needs a wider screen, such as a laptop or a tablet in landscape. On a phone, you can view, filter, and manage dashboards but not edit their layout.

Understand dashboards and templates

A dashboard is a named page of widgets—cards such as Cash at a glance, Needs attention, Pipeline by stage, or Time worked by client—arranged in rows. Your dashboards are listed in the Home navigation, in the order you choose.

Overview and Insights are your starting dashboards. They are ordinary dashboards you own, so you can change, rename, or delete them. When you create a dashboard, you can start from Blank or from one of these templates:

  • Overview — cash, goals, what needs attention, and your day at a glance.

  • Insights — revenue, expenses, and time trends compared with the previous period.

  • Time — hours tracked, billable mix, effective rate, and where the time went.

  • Projects — portfolio health, the task workday, client workload, and team capacity.

  • Work to be done — tasks, tickets, open deals, and today's schedule.

  • Money — cash position, invoice health, receivables aging, and scheduled billing.

  • Sales — forecast, pipeline by stage, and revenue on the horizon.

  • Accounting — money in and out, spending, and what you owe vendors.

A template only includes widgets you can use, and templates without any usable widgets are not offered. If you changed or deleted your Overview or Insights dashboard, create a new dashboard from the Overview or Insights template to get the original layout back. Moxie never recreates a deleted default automatically.

Create a dashboard

  1. Open Home and select New dashboard below your dashboards in the Home navigation. On a phone, select the New chip.

  2. Under Start from, choose Blank or a template. Each template card previews its layout and shows how many widgets it includes.

  3. Enter a Name.

  4. Under Who can see it, choose Only me or Shared with team.

  5. Select Create.

Pick a starting point, name the dashboard, and decide who can see it.

A dashboard made from a template opens ready to use. A blank dashboard opens in edit mode with the widget panel showing so you can start adding widgets.

Edit a dashboard

Dashboards open in view mode. To change one you own, select the pencil (Edit dashboard) at the top right. In edit mode, each widget shows a bar with its name, a drag handle, an options button, and move buttons, and the page header shows Add widgets, Name & sharing, Cancel, and Save.

Edit mode shows the widget panel and the controls for arranging each widget.

Add widgets

  1. Select Add widgets if the panel is not already open.

  2. Open a category—Money, Accounting, Time, Projects, Team & capacity, Sales, Support, or General—or type in Search widgets to find one by name or description. Categories collapse so the list stays short; each shows how many widgets it holds.

  3. Drag a widget into an existing row to place it beside other widgets, or drop it on Drop here to start a new row beneath a row to begin a new row there.

  4. Or select Add on a widget to place it in a new row at the bottom of the dashboard.

Widgets marked Uses the dashboard period follow the period you choose at the top of the dashboard.

Open a category, then drag a widget into place or select Add.

Arrange and resize widgets

Drag a widget by its handle to move it within a row or to another row, or use the up and down arrows to move it one place earlier or later. A dashboard is three columns wide. Open a widget's options (the sliders button) and choose a Width:

  • 1 column — a third of the row.

  • 2 columns — two thirds of the row.

  • Full width — the whole row.

On a desktop screen, widgets in a row that does not fill all three columns share the full width in proportion to their sizes. For example, two 1-column widgets in the same row each take half. Widgets in a row stretch to the same height.

The options menu sets the widget's width and any settings it offers.

Change widget settings or remove a widget

Some widgets offer their own settings in the same options menu. For example, Time over period can stack by Client, Project, or Person, Workday can open on Everyone's tasks or My tasks, and the forecast widgets let you choose how far to look ahead and back. Widgets that are groups of number tiles—such as Money, Invoice health, or Support—also have a Style setting: Card shows the tiles inside a titled card, and Tiles only shows just the tiles. Select Remove widget to take a widget off the dashboard.

Add section headings

Use the Section heading widget in the General category to divide a long dashboard into titled sections. Add it, open its options, and type the Heading. Section headings pair well with tile groups set to Tiles only, which is how the Insights dashboard groups its Money, Effort & effective rate, and Looking forward sections.

Save or cancel your changes

Your edits stay in a draft until you select Save, which publishes the new layout to everyone who can see the dashboard. Select Cancel to discard the draft. If you try to leave the dashboard with unsaved changes, Moxie asks whether to Keep editing, Discard, or Save and continue.

Layout on tablets and phones

Your dashboard rearranges itself for smaller screens: rows use two columns on narrower windows and tablets, and one column on phones, with widgets keeping their order. You do not need a separate mobile layout.

Choose the period and clients

When a dashboard contains time-based widgets, a period selector appears at the top. It starts at This month and offers relative periods such as This week, Last month, This quarter, Past 90 days, Past 12 months, and This year. Comparison figures use the matching previous period, shown beside the selector—This month compares with all of last month, and Past 90 days compares with the 90 days before that.

Use the client filter to narrow client-aware widgets to one or more clients. Select Clear all to return to all clients.

The dashboard period menu open with relative periods, next to the client filter and the comparison period note

The period and client filter are yours alone and are remembered for each dashboard.

  • Your choice only. The period and client filter belong to you. Changing them on a shared dashboard never changes what your teammates see.

  • Fixed windows. Some widgets use their own time window and show it beside their title, such as Scheduled revenue with Next 12 months.

  • All clients. Widgets that cannot be filtered by client show an All clients note while a client filter is active.

Open the details behind a widget

Dashboards are a starting point for action. Select a widget's title to open its full list. Select a number tile, row, or chart slice to open the matching list already filtered to what you selected, using your dashboard period and client filter plus the status, queue, or stage you clicked. For example, selecting Overdue in Cash at a glance opens Invoices filtered to overdue invoices.

Tasks, opportunities, meetings, and the unbilled time review open in place, on top of the dashboard, so you can act and return to the same view. When you finish, the affected widgets refresh.

Share a dashboard with your team

  1. Open a dashboard you own.

  2. Select the ⋯ menu, then Name & sharing. In edit mode, select Name & sharing in the header.

  3. Choose Shared with team and select Apply. In edit mode, also select Save.

The Name and sharing dialog with the dashboard name and the Only me and Shared with team choice

Everyone on your team can view and clone a shared dashboard. Only you can change it.

Shared dashboards appear in every teammate's Home navigation with a small people icon, and the dashboard header says who shared it. Teammates see each widget according to their own permissions. They cannot edit a shared dashboard, but they can:

  • Select ⋯ → Clone to edit to make a private copy they own and can change.

  • Select ⋯ → Hide from Home to remove it from their navigation.

Choose Only me again to stop sharing. The dashboard then disappears from your teammates' Home.

Manage your dashboards

Select the settings icon beside New dashboard in the Home navigation—or the Manage chip on a phone—to open Manage dashboards.

  • Drag dashboards by their handle to change their order in Home. The first dashboard is the one Home opens to.

  • Use the eye button beside a shared dashboard to hide it from Home or show it again. Hidden shared dashboards stay in this list so you can bring them back.

Reorder your Home and show or hide dashboards your team shared.

From a dashboard's ⋯ menu you can also:

  • Duplicate a dashboard you own to try a variation without changing the original.

  • Delete dashboard to remove one you own. Deleting a shared dashboard removes it for everyone it is shared with. Deletion cannot be undone.

What happens when a team member leaves

When a workspace owner deactivates or removes a team member who shares dashboards with the team, the confirmation asks what to do with those shared dashboards: Move them to me and keep them shared, or Delete them. Their private dashboards are kept when they are deactivated and deleted when they are removed. Learn more in Manage team access and Deactivate or reactivate a workspace member.

Troubleshooting

A widget says "You don't have access to this information"

Widgets always follow the viewer's own permissions. On a shared dashboard, a widget for an area you cannot access shows this message instead of data. Ask a workspace owner to review your access if you need it.

My numbers don't match a teammate's or a list page

Check the period and client filter at the top of the dashboard. Each person chooses their own, and a list page may use a different date range. Selecting the number opens the list with the same filters so you can compare.

I can't see the Edit dashboard pencil

Only the dashboard's owner can edit it. For a dashboard someone shared with you, select ⋯ → Clone to edit and edit your copy. The pencil is also hidden on narrow screens such as phones.

I can't find Manage dashboards on my phone

On a phone, the Home navigation is a row of chips beneath the top bar. Scroll that row to the Manage chip, next to New.

I deleted Overview or Insights

Select New dashboard and start from the Overview or Insights template to restore the original layout.
